A Netflix Caption, an Anniversary, and a Row That Was Always Going to Happen

On Thursday, September 10, the Netflix UK account on X posted stills of Theo James and Kaya Scodelario from the second season of The Gentlemen. The caption read: "Nearly did himself a neck injury."

In the context of the show, the line is unremarkable. It refers to James's character, Eddie Horniman, turning sharply to look at Scodelario's Susie Glass. Read on its own, on that particular date, it went somewhere else entirely.

Charlie Kirk was killed on September 10, 2025, on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. He was 31. He was shot in the neck.

The response, and the defence

Brady Penfield, a representative of Turning Point USA, the organization Kirk cofounded, accused the streamer of mocking his death and called the post disgusting. The evangelical Christian blogger Jackie Chea wrote that it was either a shameless mockery of Kirk or the most stupid and tone deaf post imaginable, and demanded the company delete it and apologize for its malice or its incompetence.

Others argued the opposite with equal certainty: that the caption plainly described a scene in a television programme, and that reading an assassination into it required the reader to bring the assassination with them.

Netflix was unequivocal. "This post directly references a plot point from our UK series, The Gentlemen, which launched its second season on September 3," a spokesperson said. "Suggestions that it has any link to sensitive real world events are inaccurate and ludicrous."

Both things are probably true at once. A social account almost certainly scheduled a line about a man turning his head too fast without anyone checking the date against the calendar of the past year. And a phrase about a neck injury, published on that day, was never going to be read neutrally by people for whom that day means one thing.

What the date actually carried

Turning Point USA marked the anniversary by describing September 10, 2025 as a day that changed America's history forever.

"One year ago, our founder, our leader, and our friend, Charlie Kirk, was assassinated while doing what he had devoted his life to: standing before young Americans and challenging them to think, to speak, and to have the courage to stand for what they believe," the group wrote. "There are no words that can adequately describe what this past year has been like."

The tribute went on to describe the specific texture of a year without him. Learning to carry on without the person at the centre of everything. Celebrating milestones he should have been present for. Standing on stages where his voice should have been heard. Watching his children grow up without their father there to see it.

Erika Kirk, his widow, took over as the organization's chairwoman and chief executive after his death. She is 37.

The criminal case is still running. Tyler Robinson, the suspected shooter, surrendered the day after the killing and has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder and other charges. In August a Utah judge sent the case to trial, a decision Erika Kirk and the wider family welcomed. Robinson is now 23 and faces the death penalty if convicted.

"Every step in this process carries the weight of all that Charlie's murder has taken from his family, especially his children who will grow up without their father," the family said in a statement. They added that they remain united in the pursuit of justice, and are praying for a transparent and timely process.

The part that is actually new

Nothing about this incident is really about The Gentlemen, and the argument about intent is probably unresolvable.

What it demonstrates is narrower and more permanent. A brand account is now publishing into a calendar it does not control and cannot fully see. Anniversaries of public deaths accumulate. Each one converts an ordinary sentence, somewhere, into an accusation. No approvals process catches that, because the problem is not the copy. It is the date it lands on.

Netflix will not delete the post, on the evidence of its statement, and it is hard to argue it should have to. But the row is a reasonable preview of the next decade of social media management: not what a company meant, but what a particular Thursday made it mean.
